@scopri_carlton, Melbourne. The night Italy found me in Carlton and my first ever 10/10 rating.

There are nights when a dining room lifts you out of a city and drops you somewhere else entirely. Scopri did that within minutes. Intimate without a hint of stuffiness, warm without crowding in. I sat down and knew something special was about to unfold.

We started with beef carpaccio. Silky slices carrying that savoury hit of egg yolk richness. Perfectly seasoned. The black garlic mayonnaise brought a dark and sweet depth that was truly incredible.

Quail arrived perched on mushrooms with gorgonzola orzotto and pancetta. First bite and I actually let out a little moan. Earthy, creamy, salty, all in balance, the quail still delicate and clean.

The gnocchi special was the dish that stopped time. Not pan-fried, so purely pillowy, each dumpling scented beautifully. Crisp lamb alongside added the ideal counterpoint in texture. Best I’ve had. Easily.

Braised short rib followed and it was a lesson in patience. Melt-in-the-mouth meat with a pleasing crispy edge, salsa verde on top for lift. You could taste the wine in the braise. A whisper of balsamic oil was a clever touch. That last bite felt emotional. Sacred, even.

Agnolotti filled with roasted rabbit came bathed in butter, the flavour still unmistakably rabbit. Delicate, honest, more than the sum of its parts.

I never go for sweet desserts, yet I demolished the tiramisu. It just felt right. Light, creamy, properly bitter-sweet.

Service matters, and Patrick was phenomenal. The favourite Italian uncle I never had. Warm, witty, quietly in control. I may have asked him to adopt me. Pacing across the night was spot on, courses flowing without rush or lag.

I’d return for the gnocchi alone, then stay for the short rib and Patrick’s wine picks. Scopri is phenomenal. It’s confident, generous, and deeply comforting. Italy, found in Melbourne.
